A salon story- for Clients and other hairstylists.
A few weeks ago I had the pleasure of working on a lovely women in her 80s. I love that i get to work with such a diverse group of people. Really its all ages, from all different walks of life, and all different kinds of styles. Thats one of the best parts about the job. Anyway, she came into see me for the first time. She’s been coloring her hair her entire life a dark dark brown. Well her natural color is a beautiful white now, so that means every 2-3 weeks her white roots start to grow in.. She’s felt for awhile now that she wanted to start lightening her hair. But in her previous salon for whatever reason, they talked her out of it. Said that she didn’t need to. Anyway frustrated and needing a change she ends up in my salon, and we decide to start lighting her hair. I lighted the shade of brown and added soft blonde highlights through her hair. I also updated her cute little short haircut to flow with her natural hair texture rather than work against it. In a fairly simple appointment, I changed her entire look and gave her what shed been asking for, for years now. She was so amazed and happy with her hair. She also does not look 80. She looks like she’s in her 60s. Absolutely stunningly beautiful woman. I wish I took pictures this time, but so much of my work is personal, and taking a photo isn’t always top priority. You’ll just have to trust me when I say she looked fabulous.
The reason I’m telling this story is because I want to make a point to you.
To potential new clients and existing- Im an excellent listener and really good at consultations, and solving hair problems . If you’ve ever felt rushed through the salon and like no one took the time to get to know your hair, know that it doesn’t have to be that way. Consultations usually take just 10- 15 minutes. In that time we can asses the Cut/ Color/ and condition of your hair while also coming up with a plan and budget. You know what to expect upfront. I also work just one on one, So I’m not juggling other clients during your appointment. This keeps all of my attention on you. This helps ensure you don’t get lost in the busy salon. If you haven’t had a change in your hair in while then lets talk. You should be doing subtle changes with your look seasonally. That’s at least 4 times a year. Falls coming up, So If your looking for a little change lets make it happen.
To Other Hairstylists- The reason I’m telling this story is because I want to make a point to you. This little lady got lost in the daily busy salon shuffle. Im sure her old hairstylist was capable of doing exactly what I did. But maybe for whatever reason, she was to busy, or not listening, or whatever the case may be, just didn’t take the time. Or maybe just designed an 80 year old look instead of giving her something youthful… I think we can agree that most people want to look younger. Sometimes we see a mature woman and automatically design an “old lady style” But most women don’t want to look Old. This is true to almost all women. Even a women in her 30s doesn’t want to look 30 she probably wants to look 25 . Think about it. We have to think outside the box. My point is If you’re a hairstylist take the time to slow down and give your clients a consultation. Ask questions and then Stop and Listen. If you don’t have time then be sure to schedule sometime at least every season to give your customers a little change/ update or at least the option to change. Don’t let people get lost in the salon shuffle. You have the power to help them feel so good about the way they look, so remember to use it.
